The Local Government Services staff also provides assistance in obtaining and administering grants from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department for local park development. An evolving list of program sizes and types that can help communities improve local parks to meet the needs of local citizens. Over the last 25 years PRPC has assisted communities in pursuing, securing, and administering most of these programs.
Local Government Services staff is always ready to help communities assess the following programs to see what program may be the best fit, develop master parks plans, prepare funding applications, and administer programs funded:
Recently communities in the Panhandle have been funded through the TPRA Recreational Trails Grant program for establishing or maintaining hiking, biking, and jogging trails. The Recreational Trails Grant is funded by the Federal Highway Administration and requires only a 20% match on grants of up to $200,000. This program is also available for the establishment or maintenance of motorized vehicle trails such as All Terrain Vehicles and Motorcycles.
The application deadline for this program is May 1st of each year, and the program does not require a master park plan to be in place.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department discontinued the Outdoor Recreation Program from 2011-2013. However it is anticipated that in the summer of 2014, the program will again be available. PRPC staff is closely monitoring the development of the program in order to identify the size, scope and availability of program funds.
